Title: Deeplight
Author: Frances Hardinge
Publisher: Macmillan Children's Books
Genres: Young adult, Fantasy
Format: Paperback
Publication Date: October 31st 2019
Pages: 437

Synopsis (Goodreads): For centuries the gods of the Undersea ruled the islands of the Myriad through awe and terror: they were very real, and very dangerous. Sacrifices were hurled into the waters to appease them, and every boat was painted with pleading eyes to entreat their mercy. They were served, feared and adored. Then, thirty years ago, the gods rose up in madness and tore each other apart.

Now, none remain. The islands have recovered and the people have patched their battered ships and moved on.

On one of these islands live Hark and his best friend Jelt. To them, the gods are nothing but a collection of valuable scraps to be scavenged from the ocean and sold.

But now something is pulsing beneath the waves, calling to someone brave enough to retrieve it.

My rating: 5 / 5 ★

Deeplight is a strange yet mysteriously beautiful story of the wonders that the sea can offer, and the dangers lurking deep beneath the surface of the waves.

This is the second book written by Frances Hardinge that I've read (the other book being The Lie Tree), and there seemed to be a pattern of my reading habits for both books: I couldn't read them quick enough. Her story lines are more than intriguing for me, and honestly, I wouldn't say they were a heavy read either, but there was a certain complexity in the way Hardinge chose her words that I find myself needing a longer time to digest them well. In the early pages of Deeplight (and also The Lie Tree), there was a point where I felt lost; I couldn't see where the story was leading towards to and I almost gave up my read—but they kept nagging at me in my mind so I pushed forward, and I'm beyond grateful than I read them till the end.

Deeplight is set in a place where the Gods have died; the Gods all lived in the sea. Hark, the boy that I felt should be older than he was supposed to be, was a boy who was enchanted by tales and stories about the Gods, despite never living during the time when they were still around. He struggles to make a living through the visitors of their island, but I would say that his biggest trouble source was Jelt, his best friend. Greed and manipulative relationships were some of the main points of the story; it somehow hurt me beyond the core of they way Hark and Jelt's friendship folded out. It made me question myself about my own treatment towards my friends, for fear that I have this manipulative trait in me as well.

Hark's character development was truly something that I enjoyed through reading this book. In the early parts of the story, he seemed to me to be a lost boy, who yearned for the Gods without knowing exactly the meaning of his life. But as the story progresses, he grew more mature and was able to stand on his own. I love the friendship he formed unwillingly with Selphin–a very badass and strong character, who's not afraid of expressing what she feels–and how they worked together to make things right. Quest is also another character that I liked reading about; he has this charm despite being an old priest, and he too was not afraid to say what he wanted to say.

The way each God was carved out in the story were astounding, and just as I had titled this post, the breathe in your fear. The more you fear them, the stronger they become—which is how things actually worked in reality. If you don't face your fears, they will eat you alive.

Deeplight is the kind of book that is hard to be put in words, there are just too many things to say about it. It's complex; it's beautiful; it's eye-opening in regards of what creatures that could be lurking deep down on the ocean floor—or way beneath that; it's a book that I don't think I'll ever read again, but it will stay in my mind for a very long time.

Many thanks to Pansing for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Deeplight is now available in all good bookstores!

Title: The Octopus Curse
Author: Salma Farook
Publisher: SeaShell Publications
Genres: Poetry
Format: E-book
Publication Date: November 1st 2019
Pages: 156

Synopsis (Goodreads): Science would have us believe that we are nothing but cell upon cell. I disagree. We are made up of stories. The stories we hear from our mothers, the ones we tell our daughters. The tales we share with sisters and friends. The ones we never say out loud, but are heavy on our minds and run like a fever in our blood.

There are a multitude of great divides between us; race, religion, cultures, the way we dress, the languages we speak, but the stories we tell bridge us together in the universal tongue of smiles, tears, pain and laughter. They remind us that, as women, we’re all chasing similar fairy-tales.

This book is a call to celebrate the bridges, delight in our stories and to focus on the joy in our lives right now, rather than racing behind the happily-ever-after. That will come in it’s own time.

My rating: 5 / 5 ★

Beautiful, enthralling and empowering!

The Octopus Curse brought me to tears once I reached its final pages.  It was indeed filled with clingy love poems, but they were written in such a wonderful way and they were so much more than just about love between a woman and a man. It was also about self-loving, and caring about those who should be loved more by the world. Not only did the poet show how beautiful being in love could be, she also showed how falling out of love and loss would be, and one should not hate themselves for going through the inevitable.

I love how the poems were connected to the beautiful facts of an octopus; despite the book being titled "octopus curse", it felt more like a miracle somehow. Women have to go through so much just to be loved by the world, and this poetry collection further proves that women are stronger than they let themselves believe.

I do admit that I was not able to relate to all the poems (and trust me when I say I bookmarked more than half of the poems from the collection), but the way they were written was absolutely mesmerising that I found myself re-reading them again and again just so that I can find my own meaning through them. It made me more curious as to what were in the poet's mind, as she wrote every single piece of this poetry collection.

If you're a poetry lover, I definitely recommend this beautiful collection of "clingy" poems.

Thank you to the author, Salma Farook, for sending me an e-book copy in exchange for an honest review. The Octopus Curse is currently free on Amazon from November 1st to November 5th, so don't miss this chance!

The octopus sometimes severs an arm to escape, and when she bleeds her blood runs blue. Luckily, she regrows lost limbs. So many years of evolution later, it is time to believe that I can do it too. Let go, and heal. Grow.

;

My rating: 4 / 5 ★

First and foremost, I would like to thank Mark Tullius and @BookTasters on Twitter for providing me with an ebook copy of Twisted Reunion in exchange for an honest review. I apologise for taking too long to complete the book and come up with this review.

Although I do love reading short stories because of how convenient they are, I am usually not too fond of reading a short story collection in one go, because I tend to lose focus due to too many different characters, and it gets to a point where I simply don't care about any of the characters anymore. This is one of the reasons why it took a while for me to digest Twisted Reunion.

I would honestly say that I have some mixed feelings over this short story collection. I'm quite a fan of horror reads, and I would say that even though the stories were not that terrifying, they are undeniably horrific if it would to be happen in reality. Mark Tullius combined several supernatural elements with psychopathic human beings, making most of the horrors enjoyable to be read. Unfortunately, I couldn't find myself enjoying all the stories to the most. Some of them had characters that I couldn't even comprehend or empathise with, while a few others just left me baffled as to what I just read.

But for more than half of the short stories in this collection, I truly enjoyed them to bits. The one where "an artist whose paintings become reality" particularly left the best impression on me, mainly because of how beautiful it seemed to hint at first, but things slowly went down to hell once the artist finished her paintings. Another one that was very memorable to me was where "a man who longs to rid himself of an annoying companion". I thought I had an idea of what their relationship was supposed to be at first, but then I was proved absolutely wrong at the end and it just made the whole story make sense in a better way.

Overall, I did enjoy reading Twisted Reunion a lot. I think that Mark Tullius is a great writer, and I would love to read more stories (especially horrors) from him in the future. Most of the stories, if not all, involved a huge deal of violence and horrific events, so if you're comfortable with that, then this book would be perfect for you!

The bartender whistled, tossed a sharpened rail spike in the air as he made his way over.
The forms of disfigured patrons advanced upon the entrance that would never be an exit.

Title: A Throne of Swans
Author: Katharine Corr & Elizabeth Corr
Publisher: Hot Key Books
Genres: Young adult, Fantasy
Format: Paperback
Expected Publication Date: January 9th 2020
Pages: 352

Synopsis (Goodreads): When her father dies just before her birthday, seventeen-year-old Aderyn inherits the role of Protector of Atratys, a dominion in a kingdom where nobles are able to transform at will into the bird that represents their family bloodline. Aderyn's ancestral bird is a swan. But she has not transformed for years, not since witnessing the death of her mother - ripped apart by hawks that have supposedly been extinct since the long-ago War of the Raptors.

With the benevolent shelter of her mother and her father now lost, Aderyn is at the mercy of her brutal uncle, the King, and his royal court. Driven by revenge and love, she must venture into the malevolent heart of the Citadel in order to seek the truth about the attack that so nearly destroyed her, to fight for the only home she has ever known and for the land she has vowed to protect.

Written in rich detail and evocative language, this is the start of an irresistible, soaring duology about courage, broken loyalties and fighting for your place in the world.

;

My rating: 4.8 / 5 ★

Don't get me wrong with the title of this post, but seriously, can it just be 2020 already? I can swear by my heart that A Throne of Swans is one of the reasons that 2020 will be a wonderful year. I need this book to be released already!

It took me a single day to finish reading this book, and after being in a reading-slump for a few months, that really says something. I'm glad I went into the story without making any notes from the blurb (honestly, I've already forgotten why I chose to review this book when Pansing contacted me) because the moment it was revealed that the nobles in this kingdom are able to transform into birds that represent their bloodline (not a spoiler, it's obviously in the synopsis), I was immediately hooked. Unfortunately for our main character Aderyn, she had a reason for being unable to transform into a bird like she's supposed to.

I would say that Aderyn is one of the best main characters that I've encountered in books. I believe that the authors successfully made her personality realistic, despite the fact that this book is set in a high fantasy world. I rarely ever hate main characters, but I've stumbled upon a few that are just too fictional to be true: either too ambitiously nice or too cold due to past incidents. But Aderyn is a beautiful character; she might have been left in ignorance over royalty matters because of her father, but she was smart enough to fend for herself. She's independent, loving, selfless yet also selfish when neededand she's definitely a badass lady as well. She might not fit to lead at first, but her character development is so good that I can't wait to know more about her in the sequel (how do I survive until then?).

Even though I consider Aderyn to be independent, realistically, she definitely needs good support around her, no matter how small they might be. She has a good friend, Letya, who is not a noble and flightless, but is truly loyal to Aderyn and I appreciated her so much for that. Letya may just be a side character, but I believe that her role in the story is big enough for Aderyn's character to grow more. I appreciated Aderyn's cousins, Odette and Aron as well. Their characters are complex enough despite not being main characters, and I don't find it hard to put my faith in them from the start till the end.

Then there's Lucien, Lord Rookwood. His title may just be Aderyn's clerk, but his role is much larger than that. I believe that his first appearance in the story was one of the best parts of the book. He would appear to be patronising at first (oh I truly enjoyed the bickers and snarky comments made between Aderyn and Lucien) but his prideful personality does have a good reasoning behind it. Of course, love would be inevitable when they kept working (and arguing) with each other, but I love the fact that the story was not focused too much on the romance. Certain stories focused too much on building the romance that they somehow overshadowed the important elements that should be the main part of the story.

When I read a fantasy, I want those fights between the royals or kingdoms, the rebellions, the revenges and the ruled rising up against the rulerswith a touch of romance, and that is exactly what A Throne of Swans is about. Or at least it feels that way in my opinion. The slow burn romance was what made the ending of the first part of this duology more impactful (I don't want to spoil anything but Lucien's condition at the end broke me to pieces).

Although it was quite hard for me to grasp where the story is leading towards to in the first few chapters, I would gladly say that the whole plot and world-building are definitely well built. I admit that I do enjoy more on fantasy plots where the ones that were ruled rise against their rulers, and even though Aderyn is fighting with the kingdom for her dominion and people, the inequality is still obvious. There seemed to be nothing for the flightless to do to fight back, but I'm putting high hopes that somehow this point would be focused in the sequel.

A bonus: I find that the true villains of this story reminded me of an element from Crimson Peak. If you've watched the movie, you'll find out what I meant once you read A Throne of Swans. It definitely blew my mind.

Overall, I'm very much in love with A Throne of Swans. It is a wonderfully written book, and I cannot wait for it to be released for the whole world to read!

A thousand thank yous to Pansing for providing me this ARC in exchange for an honest review. A Throne of Swans will be released on January 2020, so mark your calendars today!

Now my father is dead, I am the only swan here.

Hello hello ♡ It's been a while, but I'm finally back with a monthly haul post! I miss editing a bunch of pictures and being stressful about not getting the same lighting/shade in each picture of all the things I have hauled (ᇂ∀ᇂ╬)

April's haul are mostly pins and pink things, everything that screams me! I apologise beforehand if your eyes are going to be attacked with all the pink shades.

1. 花樣年華 (HYYH) The Notes 1 - English ver.

I guess it's safe to say that everyone knows that I love BTS with all my heart, and books are a major part of my life, right? So, when Big Hit (BTS' company) finally decided to come out with their own official novel, set during the HYYH era, we all know just how ecstatic I felt. I mean, c'mon, did any boy bands you ever known ever came up with a fictional world in a novel, inspired by the concept of music videos?

Big Hit released three versions of this book: Korean version, English version and Japanese version, and this is only The Notes 1. Which means that we are definitely in for another book anytime soon! If it was up to my impulsive set, I would have purchased all three versions, for the sake of "improving my Korean and Japanese skills" (🌚), but I know that that's probably what I may not do anytime soon. I decided to be (a little) smart this time and only ordered the English version.

It felt very good when I received the book, it is truly one of the most beautiful books that I've ever owned. Unsurprisingly, I haven't started reading it yet, but this time not because I have loads of other books to read. I can promise that my heart really wants to start this book right at this very moment, but I'm scared. Only those that knows what HYYH is all about will understand the reason why I'm afraid to start reading it. I can already sense all the pain and angst coming my way.

I have decided to buddy-read this one because I know I won't be able to contain the intense emotions waiting for me in between the pages. Currently, my friend Aleli (@soyguk on Instagram) will be reading it with me (soon!).

If you have a copy too and would love to buddy-read with me too, you are more than welcomed. I'd love to have more people to buddy-read with!

2. Floral Spaghetti String Top from Cotton On

Am I getting bolder in the way I dress? Maybe, or maybe I just love to try new ways to style my clothes. I purchased this one in a Cotton On store while they were having a clearance sale, getting it for only RM15 (approximately $3.50). Definitely a good purchase, and I also get to try a new style! I've come to realise that I love wearing layers, and this one is worn on top of a long-sleeved blouse.

Here are two looks on how I prefer to wear it!

— Purchased from Cotton On

3. Mermaid Tail LED Lamp

I'm a real sucker for LED lights and fairy lights, so it's about time I finally get my hands on a mermaid-shaped one! I'm happy that I managed to snag this one at a local store for a super cheap price, around RM10 only (approximately $2.40). It lights up very prettily and it makes an amazing decor for my bookshelf 🐚✨

— Purchased from Mr. DIY

4. Clear Sticker Pad

I don't think I'll ever get over my "let's buy all cute stickers" phase because, well let's face it, it is not a phase. I don't use all the stickers I purchased, but collecting them makes me feel very happy. This one has six sheets of cute semi-transparent stickers, the kind of stickers that I love to use most while journalling.

Will you just look at the holographic surface, reflecting light very prettily? Just my kind of thing.

— Purchased from Mr. DIY

5. MY FIRST SELF-DESIGNED ENAMEL PINS (Fish Cookie Pins)

This is definitely the highlight of my haul. The things that I'm proudest of.

For those that have not known yet, I've started an enamel pin business since the start of this year, and these four pins are the first designs that managed to be produced as enamel pins. From my previous haul posts, you'd know just how much I love collecting enamel pins, so I believe I made the best decision to venture into the enamel pins business too.

It still feels surreal that the designs that I made were able to be produced into these pins, they're just too gorgeous (I hope I don't appear as being vain, I just wanted to share my joy with you guys). I have no idea if I'll be able to produce more pins in the near future as one of my previous pre-orders have been cancelled recently, but I'll work harder to release more pins soon!

P.S: If you're a SHINee World, do check out my pin shop because I'm currently taking pre-orders for their anniversary pin!

6. Books

Mermaird's haul post will be incomplete without the presence of books; so here are four of them! \(´°౪°`)/

Yup, you guessed it. I definitely purchased The Summer of Chasing Mermaids because of the title, but that's not all the reasons. I love the cover, I love the synopsis of it and I do hope that I'll love the story as much as well. Thanks to my friend, Jessica of @endless_chapters, I managed to get the book for a cheap price. I guess Jess hadn't touched the book much at all, because it looks as new as a new book in a bookstore!

The Boy Who Steals Houses is the second book from C.G. Drews. I've loved her debut book, A Thousand Perfect Notes, immensely, so I can't wait to dive into this one too. The book cover is absolutely stunning (the yellows are so pretty!), and I already love the fact that it's also an autistic rep book. I've been warned that a lot of tears are going to be involved, which excites me so much more!

All We Could Have Been and Girl. Boy. Sea are review copies that I received from Pansing (@definitelybooks) in exchange for honest reviews. As of now, I've only read All We Could Have Been and it definitely lived up to my expectation. I've been delaying for some time, but a full review of it will be uploaded soon here.

I also cannot wait to read Girl. Boy. Sea. because I terribly miss going to beaches. It would be nice to at least read something related to the sea.

7. Pan-Pan Plushie

This was a surprise gift from one of my best friends, Joe ♡ I love watching We Bare Bears, so receiving this little one makes me absolutely ecstatic. Here's to another addition of my plushie family 🙌

8. Jungkook Artwork & Bookmark

The artwork and bookmark are both hand-painted by my talented junior, Ain (@itsme.tengku). I adore everything that she draws and paints; it's a real honour to become her first customer! The dedication that she poured in all her artworks, combined with the details to the littlest parts of the arts are truly beautiful. I could not capture it well in these picture, but the gold shines wonderfully, especially under direct light.

I love the bookmark the most. It was inspired by one of my favourite pictures of Jungkook of BTS, and Ain simply painted him very prettily. The freckles definitely own my whole heart ♡ If you're reading this, Ain, I hope you'll continue to make more beautiful arts and also sell them 💸💸💸

— Purchased from @itsme.tengku

9. Young Forever Photocard - Jimin

I'm going to be honest: I don't really collect photocards. I generally buy unsealed albums of BTS without the photocards and posters to lessen the cost, because well, I did purchase the albums mainly for the photobooks anyway. I've sold away some of the photocards that I pulled from sealed albums, but decided to keep seven photocards only for now. 1 for each member of BTS.

I have photocards of other members; I pull a lot of RM and V photocards, had to trade for Jungkook's photocard, but never managed to get any of Jimin's. So I've decided to simply buy one. I was torn between You Never Walk Alone and Young Forever photocards because he's adorable in both, but in the end I chose this one because I didn't own a photocard from Young Forever's album.

— Purchased from @zulaika.zainal on Carousell

10. Chronology of Love Yourself Era: Jimin & Jungkook Enamel Pins by Epiphapins

These two pins are the first pins produced by my dear friend, Epiphapins a.k.a Mir. The pins are bigger than I expected, which is not a problem at all because they turn out wonderfully. Thank you for the freebies and the sweet letter too, Mirmir! You definitely made me want to tear up.

I especially love the details on the flower crowns and the glitters. The dangling charm of a bunny and a butterfly are cute too!

— Purchased from @epiphapins: Instagram / Twitter

11. Rap Line Light Bulb Series Enamel Pins by Electro Cutz

When Electro Cutz a.k.a Han released the light bulb series for hyung-line of BTS, I just knew I had to get all of them. And I'm utterly glad that I did, because they turn out amazing! They are also my first ever pins that are coated with epoxy, so they have this wonderful glossy and smooth look, just like true light bulbs.

I love the freebies included too; the lomo cards are of some of my favourite pictures, and the "I Purple You" button badge is a nice surprise freebie!

My personal favourite of this series is J-Hope's Daydream version, because the colours are more vibrant compared to the other two. But oh, who am I even kidding? All three mixtapes own my whole heart. I can't wait for Han to release the remaining vocal line light bulb pins!

— Purchased from @electro_cutz: Instagram / Twitter

12. Idol Enamel Pin by Genius Lab

So far, I believe that Genius Lab gives out the best packaging and freebies for their pins (at least in this one). I waited the longest for this pin, compared to other enamel pins that I've purchased before, but the wait is absolutely worth it! The envelope packaging itself looks elegant, definitely fitting the pin's look that is rather traditional. In case you didn't know, the pin is based on J-Hope, Jimin and Jungkook's performance on Melon Music Awards last year.

The "Legends Never Die" stickers are a need, especially the black + holo version. The postcards are a marvellous surprise; the minimal and simplicity of the artwork makes them very beautiful. I also love the Idol keyring, which is now hanging on my car keys.

The best part is of course the enamel pin itself 🔥🔥🔥 I normally prefer hard enamel, but the fact that this pin is soft enamel makes all the details more prominent. This pin is now officially one of my favourites from my pin collection.

— Purchased from Genius Lab: Instagram / Twitter

13. Ddaeng Series, BTS x Grammys, Fallen Angel V & Golden RKive Enamel Pins by Joonseason

Hands down the best package of pins that I received for the month ♡♡♡ Joonseason a.k.a Michelle is one of my closest friends in the pin making community (considering the amount of my rants that she had to suffer going through, it's ironic that we haven't been able to meet up 🌚), and whenever she sent me her pins that I bought, I always receive extra things. This time is obviously no exception.

Out of all the pins I received, this Ddaeng series is the only ones that I actually bought. Inspired by one of the best songs by the rap line of BTS, I couldn't pass the chance of getting the full set once pre-order was opened for them. They turned out gorgeous, the combination of red and black make them very striking. As a Ddaeng enthusiast, this pin series is the greatest!

When we decided to trade pins, I knew I wanted Joonseason's BTS x Grammys pin! The boys being invited to one of the biggest award ceremony for the music industry in United States was one of the proudest moments for them and ARMYs; to have a special pin as dedication and reminder of this achievement is definitely a need, and I'm more than happy to have Michelle's creative take on it.

The bright red glitter creates a beautiful contrast from the boys ♡ Also peek at the family photo at the back (∩´﹏`∩) the softest and the most adorable!

My first pin with stained glass ✨ When pre-ordering the Ddaeng series, I was rather torn that I could not pre-order this Fallen Angel V pin too, because this look of V during the Blood, Sweat and Tears is one of my favourite looks of him (blonde V comes right after red-haired V). Michelle captured the scene from the music video beautifully, and the actual pin turned out beautiful too! It looks exquisite especially when placed against direct sunlight.

This. THIS. I never expected to receive this pretty RKive pin too, because we're supposed to only trade two pins. But being Michelle (who is the most awesome person), she decided to surprise me with it anyway. The pin is extremely reflective that it was rather hard to capture its beauty in a picture. I definitely didn't do justice to it, but I did the best I can. It's very minimalistic, a cute smol  golden version of RM's wooden plate for his studio.

Thank you so much for the wholesome package of pins, Michelle ♡ You know how much I love you, even if you don't spoil me this much (*・ε・*)

— Purchased from and traded with Joonseason: Instagram / Twitter

14. Facial Products

Because somehow I left my facial cleanser at my grandma's house, I decided to purchase a new one. I never planned to change the product that I used, but Simple recently released this Water Boost Micellar series, and it tempted me real bad. I've used this cleanser for more than a month, and I quite like it. It didn't make my skin breakout at all, and it left this lingering soft feeling on my skin. Definitely a good product for my dry skin!

Also, if you know me, you'll know that aloe vera gels are my holy grail products when it comes to my daily skin care routine. I've tried a lot of products for aloe vera gels, and this time I'm going to try the one from my local drugstore, Guardian. I've heard multiple good reviews of it, claiming that it even work wonders for strengthening the hair. Haven't tried it yet, but we'll see soon if it's actually a great product like most people said.

— Purchased from Guardian

15. Washi Tapes

"I see watermelon, I take."

Technically, that is the reason why I bought these washi tapes. I wanted the watermelon washi tape, but the tomato and strawberry tapes are cute too, so no regrets.

— Purchased from Mr. DIY

16. Mini Makeup Brush & Silicone Facial Cleanser

I don't really wear much makeup except for the basic ones, but I recently bought new eyeshadows and blusher, so I might as well get a new set of basic makeup brushes. These ones are small enough to bring during travels.

As for the silicone facial cleanser, well, I've always wanted to try one! I haven't tested this one yet because I've changed a few skin care products and I'm still trying to see if they're suitable for my skin, so I don't want to overwhelm it with testing this silicone facial cleanser. I'll probably test it after Eid, maybe?

— Purchased from Miniso

17. Map of the Soul: Persona Albums - BTS

I have actually vowed to myself that if BTS released multiple versions of an album, I would only buy half of them (meaning that if there are two versions, I'd buy one; if there are four versions, I'd buy two). But when Map of the Soul: Persona was released, and every version is a different shade of pink, I truly lost it. I decided that I should succumb to the guilty pleasure and purchase all four versions, because they would make me absolutely joyous.

To make matters better (or worse?), all versions of the photobook are beautiful and aesthetically pleasing to look at, so I know that I need all of them. Although I did purchase unsealed albums, without the photocards and postcards, as per usual. It's a teeny-bit upsetting that I didn't get the postcards and photocards, because they're adorable, but I'd rather not get them if it means getting the albums at a cheaper price.

Apart from the posters (which I didn't include in the pictures), the only thing that came along with the album is this photostrip. It's designed to resemble the negative of a film, and I love it so so much ♡ This photoshoot (from the version 1 of the album) is my most favourite, because they're just being their dorky selves (♡ >ω< ♡)

Movie: Dumbo (2019)
Director: Tim Burton
Writers: Ehren Kruger (screenplay)  & Harold Pearl, Helen Aberson (novel)
Release Date (Malaysia): 28 March 2019
Genre: Adventure / Family / Fantasy
Synopsis: Struggling circus owner Max Medici enlists a former star and his two children to care for Dumbo, a baby elephant born with oversized ears. When the family discovers that the animal can fly, it soon becomes the main attraction -- bringing in huge audiences and revitalizing the run-down circus. The elephant's magical ability also draws the attention of V.A. Vandevere, an entrepreneur who wants to showcase Dumbo in his latest, larger-than-life entertainment venture.

My rating: 4.9/5 stars (★)

Dumbo has always been one of my favourite Disney classic tales, so when it was announced that the flying elephant will have his film being remade into a live-action movie, I knew that I must go watch it. When none of my friends or family were able to make time for me, I decided to just watch Dumbo alone (a wise choice, which I should have done more). I admit that I have forgotten most of the parts in Dumbo (1941), but one thing that I'm sure of is that Dumbo (2019) definitely led to a new ending unlike the original film.

Dumbo (2019) shows the story of a newborn elephant in a circus, which was later put under the care of a man who returned home from the war, along with his daughter and son. The elephant was separated from his mother, and his oversized ears earned him the name Dumbo. Mocked and made fun of, Dumbo soon earned his "fame" when humans learned that he can fly. But fame does not equal to freedom, and Dumbo accompanied with those that truly love him struggles to find the real freedom.

Dumbo is absolutely a dear little elephant, and I love that Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) were there by his side. Unlike the original film, where Dumbo's companion is a talking mouse named Timothy (there was a cameo of a cage of mice, and one of them resembles Timothy, so Timothy-lovers, we're good), it was Milly and Joe who discovered that Dumbo could fly. Many other parts like Dumbo earning his fame and was made to perform in a bigger circus were never in the original film, but it made the new version of Dumbo better, in my opinion.

The part that struck me the hardest was when Dumbo was separated from his mother; one of the scenes were just like in the original film, and I was glad I went to watch the movie alone because I could not stop crying. Circus is just another way of promoting animal cruelty, and it pained me a lot whenever animals were forced to become human's source of entertainment.

Overall, Disney made a wonderful job in recreating the classic Dumbo—truthfully, the changes they made and the new ending was so much better! It also became a film about family and friendship, and I appreciate it with my whole heart.

Extra: If you have watched Dumbo (or don't mind spoilers), go and read this article for the differences between Dumbo (1941) with Dumbo (2019) ✨

My rating: 5 / 5 ★

Oh, lord. I have so much love for this book, I've no idea where to start.

I've finished reading Children of Blood and Bone for several weeks already, but I find it very hard to express my opinion on it in a proper review. I'd say it's for a good reason, and a bad reason all at the same time. Good because it just proves just how much I enjoyed reading the book; bad because I may risk spoiling a thing or two in this review—I really need to rant. Oh well, I'm just going to let this out.

Plot-wise, I would admit that it was rather slow at the beginning. It did not grab my attention too much, and I feel like there were too many "magical" elements being thrown into the pages. With all the gods and magic things, it was hard to keep up. I thought I would end up not enjoying the story.  But it turned out that I'm just a bit slow at picking things up. By the time I almost reached halfway through the book, the storyline just got a whole lot intense and I found myself unable to put the book down. The struggles and pains that Zelie, Tzain, Amari and Inan went through made me want to delve in deeper into their world.

A fiery personality that I relate to: I'm talking about Zelie. I am aware that a lot of people did not enjoy COBAB because of Zelie's temper and childish antics, yet to me, her personality almost hits home. I have my own tempers to deal with, so I feel like I can relate to Zelie so much. She might cause trouble because of her tempers, but those tempers are also the reason why she survived and become strong enough to fight using her new powers. And the love affair that she had with Inan was definitely controversial, but I'm afraid that I love this kind of forbidden love more than I'd admit. Inan's inner turmoils and his struggle to choose what to believe in were rather painful to read, but I do have hope that he'll find the right side someday.

I have no problems with Amari, I quite adore her. Her change from being terrified of everything into a powerful queen-to-be was a real wonder. Although at some point, I don't see the need for her to have her own POV in the story, I'm guessing that she will shine more in the next book. It's just a bit disappointing that Tzain never got to have his own POV in COBAB; I would actually love to know his inner thoughts and emotions.

Overall, Children of Blood and Bone is a rather vicious-ride for me. All the bloods shed in the story; the pain; the tortures; everything was very well-written that it brought tears in my eyes. It's the very first fantasy book with all black characters that I have encountered in my entire life, a great applause to Tomi Adeyemi for making this book alive! Also, the fact that this book is inspired by black lives being taken away without mercy, the very thought made me love Tomi Adeyemi so much more. I definitely will look forward to the author's works, especially Children of Virtue and Vengeance that is set to release by the end of 2019!

Thank you Pansing for providing me with this copy to be read in exchange for an honest review. I would definitely recommend COBAB to all young adult fantasy lover—some of you may think it's a little cliche at first, but give it a chance like I did, and who knows if you might love it as much as I do!

Fun fact: I came up with an enamel pin design for COBAB and it has personally been loved by Tomi Adeyemi ✨ I will be opening pre-orders for the pin by the end of April on my pin shop, so look forward to it!

After not writing anything here for ages (four months are too short and too long all at the same time), I have decided to come back! If you're following me on Instagram and checked out my stories, you'll know that I asked for suggestions on what to blog (and journal) about using the "question" sticker, back during January. I'm thankful to receive quite a few interesting topics to ponder on, so I'll try my best to work on them soon!

It's been three months since 2019 started, and a lot have happened since then. I was admitted into the hospital twice for falling sick, I started my own enamel pin shop, I got the highest pointer/grade for a  uni semester in my entire life, I got to spend quality times with my family, two of the articles that I wrote got published, etc; there's just too many good memories! Some things overwhelmed me a bit so I couldn't find a good time to sit down and work on my blog again. I probably won't be much active here either this year since it's my final semester in uni and on the second half of this year I'll be starting a year of internship.

In just three months, I've been through so many ups and downs, experienced euphoric and beautiful moments, went through heartbreaks and meltdowns—it's safe to say that I have shed tears for too many reasons already. I know that I haven't shared much during the past year and only posted reviews and haul posts, but I've decided that this blog will get more personal once again. I look forward to share more with you guys ♡

If you're reading this post, leave a comment below or simply say "hi" in the chatbox. I'd love to get to know me readers more!

With so much love to offer,
Aishah Humaira' ♡
